100 DOLLARS A WEEK - Day 9...

The sun came out just in time for yesterday's ceremony. Apparently, Mother Nature loves love. I love love. I love the hopefulness and optimism with which two people decide to intertwine their lives, hopefully forever...

And it was a ton of fun for all four of us. Not all weddings are fun. Actually, lots of weddings aren't, but it was clear the couple were first and foremost concerned that each of their 75 or so guests felt relaxed and welcomed. I'm pretty sure I wasn't so generous of spirit when I got married the first time at 23, but I sure hope I would be now if I were to get married the second time around. :)

Toes in the sand while watching the nuptials. Loved it...

But weddings mean liquid fun, and maybe a little more liquid fun than you would normally partake in. And while the Man and I both consider ourselves too old to get stupid frunk anymore, it doesn't keep us from imbibing enough to make us feel about 90% the next day. And that's how we woke up this morning, first me at 6, then the Man about an hour and a half after.

BREAKFAST

And considering it's brew day (IPA today), which means a lot of commotion, activity, lifting, and cleaning, the Man and I chased our low effort breakfast of coffee and cereal with a Red Bull each. Because of its Vitamin B content, Red Bull is an extremely effective, if somewhat expensive hangover antidote. I think next week's shopping trip might include a 5 dollar bottle of 60 Vitamin B capsules, which is 30 doses of Vitamin B as opposed to 5 dollars for 2 Red Bulls. However, as having to drag our asses into gear for brew day is necessitated by R&D for the Man's nanobrewery in progress, we'll chalk that 5 bucks up to business expenses. ;)

Brewer's breakfast under the mash tun...

4 servings of cereal with milk @ $2.00
+ 2 cups of coffee each (4 total) for the grownups $0.70

= BREAKFAST: $2.70 total

SNACK

As usual, Mads wanted a snack between meals, so I gave her one of her favorite healthy snacks:

    a handful of grapes @ $0.50
+ a spoonful of peanut butter @ $0.10

= SNACK: $0.60 total

LUNCH

When we had California Rolls for lunch last weekend, Joey developed his very own dipping sauce recipe, which we all thought was pretty tasty. And as he was anxious to recreate his genius, he asked me to make Cali Rolls again this week, but then he got wrapped up helping the Man to brew and asked me to make the sauce instead. And to make sure I didn't mess it up, he wrote down the recipe:

Which I was more than happy to follow. He was so proud of himself for coming up with something delicious on his own, and he seemed pretty happy that I was willing to follow his instructions to a tee. :)

Krab only rolls for the kids who haven't yet acquired a taste for cucumbers and avocados, and Cali Roll bowls for 3 adults (one of the Man's friends helped to brew) to reduce my rolling duties.

With miso soup of course...

   1 package of surimi (krab) @ $2.99
+ 2 cups of jasmine rice @ $0.80
+ 4 sheets of nori @ $0.80
+ 1 Persian cuke @ $0.15
+ 3 small Hass avocados @ $1.80
+ half a turnip, half an onion, 1/3 cup of miso, 1 green onion and 1 sheet of nori for miso soup @ $1.00
+ 1/3 cup mayo, a few tablespoons of sushi rice vinegar, a little pickled ginger @ $1.00

= LUNCH FOR 5: $8.50 total, $1.70/serving

SNACK

Mads had the rest of the miso soup and a little bit of steamed rice as an after lunch snack, but that's already been accounted for. Girlfriend can eat. :|

The Man, the boy and I had some freezer pops, which aren't even a nickel a piece.

L - R: peach, green apple, lime

SNACK: $0.15 total

DINNER

Dinner in progress is a Korean style beef stew with onions, garlic, ginger and potatoes braised in some mahkgulli (Korean rice wine - of which we were gifted an asston and are finding little ways to use up), brown sugar, and soy sauce. Joey's favorite soy slaw on the side.

Simmering as I type...

As the kids' paternal abuelita who does most of the cooking at their other house usually makes Ecuadorean or Cuban inspired dishes, they often bring their Asian food cravings with them.

And because Mads has been looking forward to her red velvet cake all weekend, we'll be having red velvet cake for dessert as well as some hot chocolate for the kids. The rest of the cake will go home with Mads, so all that gets tallied into dinner tonight.

Roughly 1.5 pounds of beef chuck roast @ $5.00
+ half an onion @ $0.15
+ two potatoes @ $0.55
+ 5 cloves of garlic and an inch segment of ginger $0.20
+ seasonings @ $0.25
+ a third of a head of cabbage @ $0.50
+ some cilantro and a bunch of green onions @ $0.20
+ seasonings for the slaw @ $0.20
+ the entire red velvet cake @ $3.00
+ hot chocolate fixings @ $0.80

= DINNER: $11.00 total, $2.75/serving (but we'll probably have leftovers).

Saturday:  $15.00
Sunday:  $23.00

$38.00 used with five days left to go.

Back in a bit to post a pic or two of dinner,

shinae
